Protests erupt outside Kasba Police station as 3 arrested in alleged Kolkata college gang rape
The West Bengal Taxi Operators Coordination Committee, led by AITUC, has announced a 12-hour taxi strike on November 6, demanding an end to police brutality and false cases against taxi drivers. The strike will affect yellow taxis, which will remain closed for 12 hours, starting from 6 am. Additionally, taxi drivers will stage a rally at Lalbazar, Kolkata's police headquarters, to voice their concerns and demands.
The Coordination Committee has communicated that the taxi drivers' Lalbazar rally is scheduled to begin at noon on November 6, with participants marching from Subodh Mallick Square to Lalbazar. One of their primary demands is the provision of organized taxi parking in the city, as the absence of parking facilities often leads to drivers facing legal actions for parking their vehicles in unassigned areas. They believe that the implementation of a structured parking system can resolve this issue. In addition to the Lalbazar campaign, taxi organizations plan to present their demands to the state's transport minister.
Nawalkishore Srivastava, the Convenor of the organization, emphasized that while the Yatrisathi app has brought some relief to taxi drivers, concerns regarding police brutality and false cases persist. Hence, the strike has been called to draw attention to these issues, with the Lalbazar rally serving as a significant component of the protest.
